I coach a Robotics team, and I also work with teachers to try to build their capacity for technology skills. </p><p>One way I try to help my kids is to teach teachers to create Graphic Organizers. Canva is a free tool that is great for creating all sorts of publications, videos, and even documents and websites.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6DcrhvqMo2T-BxQTk-OcfsIeD8ws_5b7SeKzdrOggROTdDkCgHc_yrKnuuz_eJHihrzktBBjBeptcSiFHVb-f57mn7ruFg4Xxg5wYftuuSwCd4yobXpZbKOGjjdkLWY5_xUP6gs0Mq6yYD580VK5kEff2zcfBl9s0kHffUgxEqbemGs9YmdtcIzTh/s2334/Screenshot%202023-05-11%20at%209.08.46%20AM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Canva design menu" border="0" data-original-height="622" data-original-width="2334" height="85" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6DcrhvqMo2T-BxQTk-OcfsIeD8ws_5b7SeKzdrOggROTdDkCgHc_yrKnuuz_eJHihrzktBBjBeptcSiFHVb-f57mn7ruFg4Xxg5wYftuuSwCd4yobXpZbKOGjjdkLWY5_xUP6gs0Mq6yYD580VK5kEff2zcfBl9s0kHffUgxEqbemGs9YmdtcIzTh/w320-h85/Screenshot%202023-05-11%20at%209.08.46%20AM.png" title="Canva Design Menu" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The tool is very flexible and allows you to upload graphics, or borrow from theirs. It has many great features for teachers, including classroom tools for creating alongside of your students.</p><p>There are great tutorials for teachers, at: <a href="https://www.canva.com/designschool/tutorials/canva-for-teachers/" target="_blank">https://www.canva.com/designschool/tutorials/canva-for-teachers/</a></p><p>If you are not already using Canva, teachers can sign up for an upgrade through their verification process, and get it for free. Go to<a href="https://www.canva.com/education/" target="_blank"> Canva.com/education</a></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Graphic Organizers</h2><div>Graphic organizers are a way to break down complicated problems into more manageable pieces. The often use colors and iconography to help convey where to focus. They often display facts, concepts, or ideas, and help students to classify and explain relationships.</div><div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">A couple examples...</h3><p>I was working with a teacher that is preparing for our yearly Chromebook collection, and wanted to create an organizer for a book plot study that she could print for offline use. This way, she could prepare some materials to keep the kids working after the Chromebooks are put away for the year. </p>

I struggle with my teams not knowing what to do next. I created this version of a graphic organizer that I will be laminating for my teams. This is designed so that my team members can write goal statements for each practice, so that everyone knows what they are working on, and that they can collaborate better to get their Innovation Projects and Robots ready ahead of competition.</div><div><br /></div><div>As I try to run my FLL teams as student lead, the kids need to keep each other accountable. Group work skills are very low right now, and finding ways to keep the kids moving forward with less prompting from adults is key. The hope here is that I do not have to hear... "what are we doing today?" from as many kids as I have.</div>

Most of them speak Spanish, and many of the teachers I work with have limited ability in that language. So... right now there are a number of teachers just trying to figure out how to communicate.</p><p></p><h2 style="text-align: left;">TimeKettle</h2><p style="text-align: left;">My school had purchased <a href="https://a.co/d/0Flerjo" target="_blank">TimeKettle translation earbuds. </a> These use a mobile device, such as an iPad to run translation. There are several earbud models, in varying price ranges. So far, these have been useful.</p>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="400" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.loom.com/embed/9eba4241615243ac9ed8ecfb88f9bd68" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="712"></iframe><br /><p style="text-align: left;">They use an app called TimeKettle <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/timekettle/id1485347374">iOS</a> or <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.translation666&hl=en_US&gl=US">Android</a> to use the device to help with the Translation. There are several modes for translation, but some work well for one on one translation, and others work better when you have multiple students needing translation. I suggest the 'Listen Mode' when you have more than one student, and the Simul mode when you have a longer one on one conversation to do.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Microsoft Translator<a href="http://store-images.s-microsoft.com/image/apps.62805.9007199266246183.6d8993ef-ecef-40a0-bddb-cffea70d09b3.930fad14-97f5-415e-9bf1-54bbc1c6441b" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Microsoft Translator icon" border="0" height="200" src="http://store-images.s-microsoft.com/image/apps.62805.9007199266246183.6d8993ef-ecef-40a0-bddb-cffea70d09b3.930fad14-97f5-415e-9bf1-54bbc1c6441b" title="Microsoft Translator icon" width="200" /></a></h2><br /><br /><p style="text-align: left;">Another method does not need a fancy iPad or earbuds. <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/translator/education/">Microsoft Translator</a> is another great resource, that can work on Chromebooks, Macbooks, and other devices. It can work on your phone, iPad as well!<br /></p><p>Simply travel to the <a href="https://translator.microsoft.com/">web address here</a>, or download the appropriate app for your device in it's store.<br />Microsoft Translator also can work within a Teams meeting, so that you can translate for a parent teacher conference, or other time over distance.<br />None of these options are perfect. But, they do lend a hand in a classroom where teachers and students do not share a first language.</p><p></p><br /><br /><br /><br />Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09672054113517845245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290908429734287191.post-92058634054213478332022-07-01T14:01:00.002-05:002022-07-01T14:01:29.099-05:00Spike Prime Printable Blocks<p>As I prepare for coaching Middle Schoolers here in Waupaca for FIRST Lego League, I am trying to teach kids to code the SPIKE Prime Lego robots. This has its challenges. Some kids take to coding well, and some need more visuals to guide them. Teams may also want to whiteboard out their coding concepts. </p><p>I created this set of printable Word Blocks as a resource for printing, laminating, and maybe adding some magnets to the back. This allows me to put up code in a demonstration, or my teams to talk about how to achieve things after they have done some pseudo-coding of their projects. Having manipulative items are always nice for hands-on coding practice. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6eUggeE_S6u2E14_Yvwyi4iXKLGWsnV-ZDMAxKGegV6txXzKwv4ncqy81OpeZWB6VV-wn9EYVZo0DrBfVxiYktkna3v_4Mx9PfKgVxOAwia9ypsDzqzKipygAlcgIKCbuotVk-V4XHfqNe8FcVByeGRsCteUkUZjtX0VzvLA82NPieA0Z5Zb7MwXN/s4032/IMG_9252.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="word blocks showing proportional line follow program." border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6eUggeE_S6u2E14_Yvwyi4iXKLGWsnV-ZDMAxKGegV6txXzKwv4ncqy81OpeZWB6VV-wn9EYVZo0DrBfVxiYktkna3v_4Mx9PfKgVxOAwia9ypsDzqzKipygAlcgIKCbuotVk-V4XHfqNe8FcVByeGRsCteUkUZjtX0VzvLA82NPieA0Z5Zb7MwXN/w320-h240/IMG_9252.JPG" title="Whiteboard Word blocks for Proportional Line follow." width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Whiteboard Word blocks for Proportional Line follow.</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6OSTGLibDQ40MYxDxBsE6tyKJDNEggP2sWTFB6XdQByabM4qytH9Nq5HlvFZHrtJMw_LqWUXq7Gn1uZ8OVIA0jl5HFqpNL6YICIei3PhY7Iz80oOlgfdPvcPKmzPxI-YYZlynnSNTjgjEHGOu1cQRt_R1sK1QyrHaLsixaLZJQQm3kg3OhzqKEG-I/s4032/IMG_9253.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Table covered with word blocks" border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6OSTGLibDQ40MYxDxBsE6tyKJDNEggP2sWTFB6XdQByabM4qytH9Nq5HlvFZHrtJMw_LqWUXq7Gn1uZ8OVIA0jl5HFqpNL6YICIei3PhY7Iz80oOlgfdPvcPKmzPxI-YYZlynnSNTjgjEHGOu1cQRt_R1sK1QyrHaLsixaLZJQQm3kg3OhzqKEG-I/w320-h240/IMG_9253.JPG" title="Table covered with word blocks" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Here is my collection of laminated word blocks</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>Below are the files I created for creating these blocks. Technology Education students right now are in person, but due to COVID restrictions, they aren’t able to use as many traditional tools. I am helping my Tech Ed teacher, Mr Waldschmidt, to find options that students can program, create, and model using tools on Chromebooks.</p><p>Here is the short version. Machines like <a href="https://glowforge.com/" target="_blank">Glowforge</a> and <a href="https://cricut.com/" target="_blank">Cricut</a> use Scaleable Vector Graphics files (SVG) to program the machine to cut and scribe designs. Google Drawings is a application, part of the Google Suite, that allows you to create Vector drawings. This file can be downloaded and re-uploaded into applications for the Glowforge and Cricut.</p><p>I like it when students try to think of problems that they can solve for themselves. Think of an authentic problem that they can solve. My example shows how to create a phone holder that I could laser cut from some plastic. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Smf6MrUiM5g/X7_IryvrNOI/AAAAAAAAms4/t4fw316GsLQy3iCCl7XzwJHEvYINOYg4gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1334/334A4B92-916E-4C85-8E4A-217FA799C0B5.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1334" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Smf6MrUiM5g/X7_IryvrNOI/AAAAAAAAms4/t4fw316GsLQy3iCCl7XzwJHEvYINOYg4gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/334A4B92-916E-4C85-8E4A-217FA799C0B5.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here is the example I created in my presentation.</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KpK1ZoDbfS8/X7_J3WrYhXI/AAAAAAAAmtI/HniNyp69dAEgonBXUsQgWKN0g6ECgjlBwCPcBGAYYCw/s2040/A332E05F-D44F-427E-973F-25BBF411B8E4.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Impostor Sketch by Art Schultz in Google Drawings" border="0" data-original-height="2040" data-original-width="1759" height="97" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KpK1ZoDbfS8/X7_J3WrYhXI/AAAAAAAAmtI/HniNyp69dAEgonBXUsQgWKN0g6ECgjlBwCPcBGAYYCw/w84-h97/A332E05F-D44F-427E-973F-25BBF411B8E4.jpeg" width="84" /></a>Here is my long video, with bonus footage of creating an Impostor from Among Us.</div><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/f_nou8m5ZW0" width="320" youtube-src-id="f_nou8m5ZW0"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1MgI8s8uJKHvVS7qByjjjD5kDMsCr3L508QnubIG4Ltg/copy">Here is a copy of my template.</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><br /></p>Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09672054113517845245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290908429734287191.post-49318481847660852352020-08-23T14:28:00.003-05:002020-08-23T14:28:41.056-05:00Waupaca Tech Camp 2020<p> Hi all!</p><p>One of the ideas I helped launch in Waupaca is the Waupaca Tech Camp. It is a time for teachers to give a little summer time for learning about technology supports for their classroom. Normally, it was a face to face occasion, and on my home turf at the Middle School. But this year... much different.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPgHsbUXBG8/X0K9QF0xTCI/AAAAAAAAliA/Yg3rvJxuUFccocWewU2fVNAoLfguDT6NgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3232.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1539" data-original-width="2048" height="197" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPgHsbUXBG8/X0K9QF0xTCI/AAAAAAAAliA/Yg3rvJxuUFccocWewU2fVNAoLfguDT6NgCLcBGAsYHQ/w262-h197/IMG_3232.JPG" width="262" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZXzmIC1ERhA/X0K9b_rzAMI/AAAAAAAAliE/2kxKxg0YfH4k7eJYtP6CP_7CXBrpHcZPQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_6456.JPG" style="clear: right; display: inline; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1539" data-original-width="2048" height="197" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZXzmIC1ERhA/X0K9b_rzAMI/AAAAAAAAliE/2kxKxg0YfH4k7eJYtP6CP_7CXBrpHcZPQCLcBGAsYHQ/w262-h197/IMG_6456.JPG" width="262" /></a></div><p>This year we held it at Waupaca High School... which was different. Classrooms were spread around the building, instead of in one hallway. Acceptable changes. We also added in a Virtual option, where teachers could join in our lessons via Google Meet. Presenting information while masked up was different, and sometimes harder for the participant to hear... but livable.</p><p>Here, I would like to post some of the sessions I presented this year.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Asynchronous Learning</h2>

<br />
I recently found an opportunity to take an online PD from MakeyMakey, presented by <a href="https://twitter.com/Tom_Heck" target="_blank">Tom Heck</a>.<br />
<br />
This course, called 'Beyond the Banana" explores electric circuitry that can be created and adapted to the <a href="https://makeymakey.com/" target="_blank">MakeyMakey</a>, a circut board that connects to a computer via USB. The MakeyMakey acts as a keyboard for the computer to add inputs from the real world.<br />
<br />
As the MakeyMakey works as a keyboard, you can program with websites like Scratch, Tynker, or just play a piano.<br />
<br />
I created an Indiana Jones drawing, that played the song as well. The Makey Makey was plugged into all of its' front ports, and a few letters via wire plugs on the back. <a href="https://ericrosenbaum.github.io/MK-1/" target="_blank">It interacted with this website piano.</a><br />
<br />
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/m_biSGshF1c" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
My final project was to create a Instructable that goes through the design of an invention. My invention was more of an adaptation of an idea, to create a game I could play with my kids.<br />
<br />
I created a Skeeball table, and wrote my first Instructable!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="424" data-original-width="741" height="183" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XgfUlguv1xU/Xqmz56qzynI/AAAAAAAAjp8/M0QBAIhVs6Ay6AHGc5o-zONzxHuh3Xu9gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2020-04-29%2Bat%2B12.05.19%2BPM.png" width="320" /></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.instructables.com/id/Makey-Makey-Skeeball-Table/" target="_blank">Here is the link to my instructable</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I learned a lot, and had some fun. Tom did a great job, learning how to teach an online course during the pandemic. I learned a lot, and some tricks that I can teach my teachers!<br />
<br />
Thanks a bunch Tom!Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09672054113517845245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290908429734287191.post-17152032369285866452020-03-17T19:29:00.001-05:002020-03-17T19:37:02.783-05:00Starting to work from home...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So today I decided to start working from home during the #covid_19 emergency. I’m working on building professional development for teachers, responding to emails, and planning student tutorials. It’s new, but not scary. Looking forward to seeing how far my school grows with new skills!Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09672054113517845245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290908429734287191.post-12156230912308150192020-02-06T15:57:00.004-06:002020-02-06T16:01:10.790-06:00DonkeyCar: Raspberry Pi Controlled Robot Car<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last summer, I worked with students at Waupaca Middle School to create robotic cars. We started building from instructions from <a href="http://donkeycar.com/">donkeycar.com</a>, to build cars powered by Raspberry Pi computers.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r4LKdtGvyE4/XjyLiJnHTRI/AAAAAAAAivw/ujuqrbejS7E_O2cCoiUJ3tRpjo-zDgRfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/ezgif.com-video-to-gif%2B%25284%2529.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="338" data-original-width="600" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-r4LKdtGvyE4/XjyLiJnHTRI/AAAAAAAAivw/ujuqrbejS7E_O2cCoiUJ3tRpjo-zDgRfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/ezgif.com-video-to-gif%2B%25284%2529.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This process was technical, but my students did much of the heavy lifting. I created the disk images for the students, and my 3d printer was printing some of the largest parts ahead of time for our two week course. We were successful in creating drivable cars, within a week! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Here is a list of what the students did:</h3>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Disassemble necessary parts of the car</li>
<li>Assembly.</li>
<li>Mounting battery.</li>
<li>Finding the codes for calibrating the cars.</li>
<li>3d printing parts.</li>
<li>programing in their codes, </li>
<li>launching the driving website.</li>
<li>designing a road course for the cars.</li>
<li>connecting a tablet to drive their car.</li>
<li>driving the cars.</li>
<li>and learning to fix the cars... when they didn't work so well.</li>
</ul>
<h3>
Here is the process that we followed.</h3>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" height="299" mozallowfullscreen="true" src="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vTs0H5dQONuMOn1tFqa93dvWFpqdMeMaAtbc_Q4m_YKYtSs17YY1aIthGa1_xZRv9qEJQMf56-hpqMT/embed?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000" webkitallowfullscreen="true" width="480"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1OKrBMQ5BOB8frFtBnvbRwdFmhK8irw54XVPPFvv2AEg/copy" target="_blank">Want a copy?</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We have more work to do... but the platform has options to expand. Looking in the future to work on the autonomous driving programming. Also it would be great to find a more permanent course for our cars. I would love to have a bit of a community of other drivers that want to come together work!</div>

<h2>
Waupaca Middle School Robotics Club</h2>
<div>
This year, my students have been asking me for an after school club. Students loved working with video cameras, and exploring the various robots I have in my classroom. I partnered up with my Tech Ed Teacher, Mr. Michael Waldschmidt, and we opened the labs for students to create.<br />
<br />
Our new after school club has been working to build STEM skills in our Middle School students.</div>
<div>
The first project was working to create a hydraulic arm, using syringes, and rubber tubing.<br />
<br />
The slides below are a bit of a log of what our students are up to, which run on digital signage outside of the lab.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" height="389" mozallowfullscreen="true" src="https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vRf1b3Wd8NGuH7YXtHXGFGcZ52SFmvjJCE0Fc7winq5J-Q9rhWGgSAgdxRs-pzSThgoRMNHSwIW1g71/embed?start=true&loop=true&delayms=5000" webkitallowfullscreen="true" width="480"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Currently, students are learning about coding, using Ozobots and Spheros. Students also are learning to manually fly light drones, such as the Parrot Mambo and the Tello Rize.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Students are beginning to work through the Apple Swift Playgrounds app, to learn ways to code the drones and robots.</div>

<div>
<b>UPDate: We tried, but the eggs didn't hatch!</b><br />
<br />
Lesson: Failure is ok. The eggs were fertilized in winter, and I guess that this makes the eggs less likely to hatch. This was a first attempt, and I guess we didn't get spring chickens!<br />
<br />
But, we learned about live streaming, chickens, and some changes to try next time.</div>
<br />
<b>Original Post:</b><br />
My students were interested in hatching chicken eggs. We talked through the problem, and decided to create a live stream, similar to the <a href="https://www.aprilthegiraffe.com/" target="_blank">April the Giraffe baby watch.</a><br />
<br />
<br />
So, we are currently on Day 1 of our 21 day hatch. Incubator is set up, student jobs decided, and the live feed is up!<br />
<br />
Join in the chicken fun!<br />

I work with multiple iPads in a classroom where Green Screen editing happens regularly. I struggle with finding ways to attach a microphone to the iPad. My RODE mic has what is called a 'cold shoe' on the bottom of it. Which attached nicely to my iOgrapher case for iPad mini.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<br />
My problem is that I only have one iOgrapher case, and 10 iPads. I needed a way to attach the Mic to a tripod when the iOgrapher is not available.<br />
<br />
So I came up with this, that I made in TinkerCAD. I finished it off with a few bolts and wingnuts. Depending on the size of your tripod, you might need to wrap some cardboard around the pipe that the mount connects to...<br />

I stumbled across this <a href="https://github.com/nasa-jpl/open-source-rover/blob/master/README.MD" target="_blank">project in my feed</a>. It is a miniature version of the NASA JPL Mars Rover.<br />
<br />
I plan to build and program a robot with my students at Waupaca Middle School. Students will learn to work design and build, program, and find solutions to robotic exploration. We will follow the Stanford Design process, and create tools for the robot to be able to find information about it's environment.<br />
<br />
I am developing the unit now, but I will post links and resources as I create them.<br />

We worked with a live recording, where our 'anchor desk' could record the pieces together.<br />
<br />
There were a lot of pieces, but we were able to get some nice results.<br />
<br />
Items needed:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Green Screen or Painted Green wall. I used a Matte Finish green paint from my local paint store. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Video Camera or Digital SLR with an HDMI output. I had a Nikon D3300 and a Samsung Video camera. Having the ability to zoom is a good idea for larger groups.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
HDMI Capture Card, and a cable to suit. I use the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-UltraStudio-Mini-Recorder/dp/B009D91314/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1528849257&sr=8-3&keywords=blackmagic+design+ultrastudio+mini+recorder" target="_blank">Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder</a>, which outputs to Thunderbolt on my iMac. But the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Cam-Link-Broadcast-camcorder/dp/B0748QYPX9/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1528849321&sr=1-7&keywords=elgato" target="_blank">Elgato Cam Link looks good too.</a> Check the connections on your computer, because this is the device that connects your Camera to your computer. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Software. <a href="https://obsproject.com/" target="_blank">OBS Studio</a> is a great piece of open source software. It runs on multiple operating systems. It connects to almost everything, and if you work hard at it, you can connect almost any source for video assets. There are lots of resources on YouTube to use it effectively. Stream to YouTube, Twitch and other sources. Green Screen effects, video sources... it can do amazing things!</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A second monitor is handy. I connect and mirror my iMac to the second display, so my presenters can see the live effects in their recording.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://artschultz.blogspot.com/2017/10/build-your-own-teleprompter.html" target="_blank">A Teleprompter is a nice piece to add to your kit.</a></div>

<div>
We used iPads and iMovie for iOS for our recorded news segments. Student crews went on location with those devices.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
The video below explains how to turn on some of the equipment in my studio, as a reference for students and teachers. It does not explain how to add in the greenscreen effects.<br />
<br /></div>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kUiukc8h-14" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br />
<br />
An alternative is to look at iPads for recording your Green Screen segments. <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/touchcast-studio/id603258418?mt=8" target="_blank">Touchcast</a> or <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/green-screen-by-do-ink/id730091131?mt=8" target="_blank">Green Screen by DoInk</a> are great apps for achieving this.</div>

<br />
<br />
Hi everyone,<br />
<h2>
Resolutions</h2>
It’s been a bit since I’ve posted... but I have been working on my resolutions, or just goals.<br />
<br />
So, I thought I would post a few of them here, so maybe I will keep them.<br />
Firstly, I want to take more photos this year. I want to be more creative, and spend more time working with my camera. Post to Instagram more often.<br />
<br />
I also want to blog more. Frankly, I have been slack after changing jobs, and I have to work towards documenting my ideas more.<br />
<br />
I want to experiment more with robotics and programming this year. I have been playing with Ozobots with my Hour of Code project. I will be posting more with that in my next post soon.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Winter Break project</h2>
<h3>
Google Certified Trainer Application</h3>
I have been working to certify as a Google Certified Trainer. The process has gotten easier since I last certified. The tests are fewer, and less expensive.<br />
<br />
So, why should I certify? Well, you build skills. You delve into Google products that you might not have played with before. Dig deeper. Learn. The Google Training program has many lessons built, to help you review. Get started with your training at the <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/training" target="_blank">Google Training Center</a>. It has skills to build with Google products, Digital Citizenship, and skills you can build with being a better trainer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BBuuXR-9vvk/WkgtmuFrA8I/AAAAAAAAQqI/-2dawOwG1F0Atc9TmCNs7T8Bd9ntgsf3wCLcBGAs/s1600/Copy%2Bof%2BSelfie.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Selfie with Google Badges" border="0" data-original-height="803" data-original-width="746" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BBuuXR-9vvk/WkgtmuFrA8I/AAAAAAAAQqI/-2dawOwG1F0Atc9TmCNs7T8Bd9ntgsf3wCLcBGAs/s320/Copy%2Bof%2BSelfie.png" title="" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
If you want to be a Google Certified Trainer, you need to pass three tests and have done 5 recent trainings. The tests are <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/certification_level1" target="_blank">Google Certified Educator 1</a>, <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/certification_level2" target="_blank">Google Certfied Educator 2</a>, and the <a href="https://www.webassessor.com/form/ssoLogin.do?method=process&provider=google&brand=GOOGLE&forcesubmit=false" target="_blank">Trainer Skills assessment</a>. Each has a fee to take, but the assessments are cheaper than they had been in the past.<br />
<br />
I enjoyed the process of applying for Google Certified Trainer over the break...<br />
<br />
Steps to prepare for your Google Certified Trainer:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li><a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/fundamentals/course" target="_blank">Take some fundamentals training.</a> Practice for the Certified Educator 1 Test.</li>
<li>Register and take the <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/certification_level1" target="_blank">Certified Educator 1 Test</a>.</li>
<li>Prepare for the Certified Educator 2 Test with the <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/advanced_training/course" target="_blank">Advanced course</a>.</li>
<li>Register and take the <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/certification_level2" target="_blank">Certified Educator 2 Test</a>.</li>
<li>Prepare for the <a href="https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/trainer_course/course" target="_blank">Certified Trainer Assessment</a></li>
<li>Take the <a href="https://www.webassessor.com/form/ssoLogin.do?method=process&provider=google&brand=GOOGLE&forcesubmit=false" target="_blank">Trainer Skills Assessment</a></li>
<li>Fill in your application, and make your video...</li>
</ol>
<br />
<br />
Here is my application video:<br />
<br />
<iframe allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" gesture="media" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DACEAfn4N2w" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
With luck, I will be successful... at least I got something out of the process.<br />

One of my jobs this year is teaching a media studies class for 7th graders. I have about 13 kids right now, and we are working on creating a news program for our school. One of the things that might help my kiddos this term is the ability to be able to see their words on screen as they record.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here are my steps in getting a teleprompter for my classroom. Maybe you can make one too.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My school has a great 3d printer, a Makerbot Replicator Mini. I thought, well maybe I can print one.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I found <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1665711" target="_blank">this project online</a> by <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/speedy777" target="_blank">speedy777</a> and downloaded the STL files. I had to modify some of the parts, so that they would print on my Makerbot. It took a couple of days to get all of the parts together, glue some of the pieces that I had to cut, and cut down some bolts to fit more nicely. The glass, shown in the video, is from an old photo frame, and I covered the edges in electrical tape.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nALAaTTgS7U/WduHx6nOdTI/AAAAAAAAFOs/Ts4mCDNWQs4tvxRwOSPSd4ThN9qXmP1rgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nALAaTTgS7U/WduHx6nOdTI/AAAAAAAAFOs/Ts4mCDNWQs4tvxRwOSPSd4ThN9qXmP1rgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_3109.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/sSXz8ZHncJ4" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I downloaded the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/parrot-teleprompter/id1010384663?mt=8" target="_blank">Parrot Teleprompter app</a>, and I control the play pause with a <a href="https://satechi.net/products/satechi-bluetooth-smart-pointer" target="_blank">Saetchi Smart Pointer</a> bluetooth remote. All I do is gently cover the glass with a sweatshirt to darken the space around the glass and set the iPad to maximum brightness. Students can copy/paste text from Google Docs on the iPad into the teleprompter.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This compliments <a href="http://artschultz.blogspot.com/2017/03/teaching-new-tricks.html" target="_blank">my setup in OBS</a> to record and livestream work at Waupaca Middle School.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll post some student work in the near future!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<br />
Have some text that you want your Chromebook to read? It can! Your Chromebook can read passages that you highlight, if you have an extension called <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/select-and-speak-text-to/gfjopfpjmkcfgjpogepmdjmcnihfpokn" target="_blank">Select and Speak</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XLtkRQceuTE/WcFZ8o5jT5I/AAAAAAAAEys/i9AtjPyYbIM2mbcdji0iV4D8X1y7SS8QwCLcBGAs/s1600/SELECTANDSPEAK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="976" data-original-width="1600" height="243" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XLtkRQceuTE/WcFZ8o5jT5I/AAAAAAAAEys/i9AtjPyYbIM2mbcdji0iV4D8X1y7SS8QwCLcBGAs/s400/SELECTANDSPEAK.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Talk to me please!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you install it, you can highlight text, and get the chromebook to tell you what the highlight says!<br />
Highlight the text and press the extension button on the top of the chrome window. Watch the video for more detail.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KhNseIH6od4" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Google Docs can do the opposite. You can talk to your chromebook, and it will type what you say. Go to Tools, and Voice typing. Give it a try!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R_cmi-DqSHM/WcFa7Ho62VI/AAAAAAAAEy8/NQPaWWO0_uUAmiHt3qlpoeVYqA32SKk9gCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2017-09-19%2Bat%2B12.58.40%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1"><img alt="Picture of Voice Typing in Google Docs menu." border="0" height="464" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R_cmi-DqSHM/WcFa7Ho62VI/AAAAAAAAEy8/NQPaWWO0_uUAmiHt3qlpoeVYqA32SKk9gCK4BGAYYCw/s640/Screen%2BShot%2B2017-09-19%2Bat%2B12.58.40%2BPM.png" title="Voice Typing" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_zW4Ch3_-t0" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<br />
Just remember to say words like 'period' and 'question mark' and it will add the punctuation.<br />
Remember, this does not take the place of your editing work! Check to make sure that it is using the correct words, (for example: to, too, and two).<br />
<br />
Hope this helps you to use your Chrome browser or Chromebook more effectively.</div>

Here are a few of the students in action. Many were doing camera animations. Tripods were nice to help hold the iPads, but I also was able to borrow a few wire book holders from the library. This helped the students to keep the camera still. Cardboard, post-it notes, whiteboard markers, tape, and a few toys made life easier.<br />

Here are the apps we used:<br />

Sometimes you want to create digital effects for a movie, but... you just do not have any fancy software to create your video effect.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, if you have a mac, you might be able to create something that may meet your needs... in Keynote and iMovie. Basic Mac apps from Apple.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is my Video Tutorial, broken down into small parts.<br />

<br />
There may be other applications for doing this method. If you have ideas about how you might use this, add it to the comments section!<br />
